How The Celtic Quarter Came to Be
The original intent of the founders of The Celtic Quarter was to start a chapter of the St. Andrews Society (Scottish) here in the Keweenaw. Conversation led to ‘why isolate the neighboring nations who have many similarities and so much to offer, and have contributed so much to this area?’ It was then decided that a Celtic society should be formed.
During a genealogy research, it was discovered that according to the last (2000) Census, 25% of the U.S. population claimed to be of Celtic heritage. This led the researcher to wonder, ‘what percentage of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan claims a Celtic heritage?’ It was soon discovered that nearly one quarter, 23.7% of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula claimed a Celtic heritage.
At a subsequent meeting, the name, The Celtic Quarter was suggested and adopted.
The Celtic Quarter is a non-profit organization dedicated to sharing the rich Celtic heritage with others. We welcome anyone interested in Celtic culture to join the society. Under the direction of the board, the historical Pewabic House at 222 Hancock Ave., Hancock, Michigan, was purchased in the fall of 2009. Future plans for the house include a small museum , a genealogy center, and a welcome place for meetings and classes in all things Celtic.
Meetings are held on the 2nd Monday of each month at 6:30pm, at the Celtic Quarter House,222 Hancock Ave., Hancock, MI. Everyone is welcome to join us.
